COLD MOLDED PLYWOOD, the process The cold molded process in boat building begins with a set of frames. These are for guidance, and will be removed when the hull has been built around them. All the wood shown will be taken out, and re-used on another boat. With this "frame" aligned and trued, the process begins: In the image above, the first layer of planks has been epoxied to the bottom of the hull. The remainder of the hull has its first layer of planks in place. Additional layers are added at opposing directions to the layer below. This gives a strength that cannot be found in single ply construction. In the photo above, all layers, (usually 3), have been applied and fairing, (smoothing), has begun. The frames have been removed and the hu ll is now a single piece, a "unibody", very strong and very light.
